📒Reporting

Learn how to create reports in Hamina Network Planner.

Hamina Network Planner offers a built-in, customizable reporting systems. It can generate a static, traditional PDF report, or a web link to an online, interactive report.

The online, interactive report is essentially a read-only version of Hamina, with full panning, zooming, and interactivity. The report viewer doesn't need a Hamina account or license - they only need a link to the report (and a password, if you choose to password-protect it).

Creating a Report

To create a report in Hamina Network Planner:

  1. Click the Reporting button in the upper right. Then, select Create a new report.

  2. The Report Editor will appear in a new browser tab. In the Create a new report dialog, choose between either a Simulation or Survey report type. The report configuration and available pages differ depending on which report type you choose. For Simulation reports, choose which Wi-Fi bands to include, name the report, and click Create.

For Survey reports, choose which Wi-Fi bands to include, name the report, can choose which SSIDs to include, and click Create.

  3. Use the Report Editor to customize the report. For details, see the Report Editor Overview

  4. Share the report, either by generating and downloading a PDF, or by sharing a link the the report.

If you've created a previous report that you'd like to reuse, you can use the Template dropdown menu to browse previous projects and reports that you've created.

Report Editor Overview

The Report Editor has several sections:

  1. Page Title and Description - Customize the title and description of each page in the report. Changing the title here will also change it in the Pages column.

  2. Move, Hide, and Add Pages - Change the ordering of sections and pages, change where each page is in each section, and add custom pages anywhere in the report.

  3. Generate PDF - Generate and download a static PDF version of the report.

  4. Share Report Link - Customize and create a link to a live, interactive, web-based version of the report.

  5. Pages - Switch between different pages of the report, and shortcut to hiding individual pages.

In the upper right of the Report Editor, you can upload a custom logo to add branding to your report. You can upload it either by clicking on the field, or dragging a logo to the field.

Pages

Use the Pages list to quickly switch between pages. You can quickly hide individual pages by hovering your mouse over a page, and clicking the Hide button.

Once a page is hidden, click the Show button to re-enable the page for the final report.

Report Pages

Depending on the report type (Simulation or Survey), the available pages will differ, primarily due to the different data types that are available. Survey reports only contain Wi-Fi heatmaps.

Bill of Materials

Project Notes

Cabling and Power Details

Bill of Materials

Lists all of the materials required to complete the project. Not available in Survey reports, since site surveys don't contain equipment that can be used to build out a BOM (Bill of Materials).

If the same AP and mounting type exists in the project with multiple colors, then the mount will be split out into a line item for each color. Use this if you need to define multiple types of ceiling mounts, for example.

Nearly all text fields in the Bill of Materials are editable; hover your mouse over the field, and an Edit (pencil icon) button will appear that you can use to change or add text.

Project Notes

The Project Notes page contains a rich text and Markdown editor that you can use for documentation purposes within the project.

The Project Notes are also editable in Hamina Network Planner in Report menu > Project Notes.

Map Pages

Reports in Hamina Network Planner contain many Map Pages. Some examples of Map Pages are:

  • Coverage

  • Secondary Coverage

  • SNR

  • Interference

  • Data Rate

Some Map Pages do not display heatmaps:

  • Notes and Zones

  • AP Placement

  • Client View

Each Map Page has a customizable Layers menu. On a per-page basis, the layers that are selected in the Report Editor will be visible by default in the online/web Report Viewer. This also includes labels for access points, switches, and wired clients.

When a link to the online/web report is shared and opened in the Report Viewer, the user can in turn open the Layers menu and further customize what is visible on each map page.

Sharing Reports

Online Reports in Hamina Network Planner provide your managers, customers, and project stakeholders with a fully interactive, read-only Hamina Network Planner interface. The user interface is very similar to Hamina Network Planner, except there are no tools, and the report viewer can navigate between heatmaps and views with a simple menu. The heatmaps and views that the user sees are determined by which pages you show and hide. Learn how to share an online report.

PDF Reports provide customers with classic (potentially physical) deliverables. Learn how to generate, download, and share PDF reports.

Sharing Online Reports

To share an Online Report, click the blue Share button in the upper right.

Next, you'll have the option to create a password for the report. Click the Create links button to create a link.

The report will be available as long as the report exists. You can click the red Revoke links button to make the report no longer accessible.

Whenever the Online Report is loaded or refreshed, it shows the most recent version of the project, so the documentation is never out of date.

Generating PDF Reports

If the customer requires a physical deliverable, you can generate a PDF report with the Download button in the upper right. Select Generate PDF to begin the report generation progress, at which point you will see a progress indicator. When the report has finished generating on the Hamina Cloud, the Download PDF button will become available.

Per Hamina account, only one PDF Report can be generated at a time. You won't be able to start generating a new PDF report until the previous report is finished generating.

Save Current View as Image

In the Reporting menu, the Save current view as image option downloads a snapshot of whatever is displayed on the canvas as a PNG. This includes the resolution of the canvas, the current rendering state of the selected heatmap, the zoom level and pan of the map, and any layers that are selected.

Saving in High Resolution

The resolution of the canvas is determined by the size of the web browser window on the desktop, and the resolution of the screen. If the browser isn't maximized to fill most of (or all of) the desktop, the canvas and resulting image will be of lower resolution. Similarly, a low-resolution (or low-DPI) display will produce a lower-resolution canvas and resulting image.

To produce an image of the highest quality, ensure that the browser is maximized to fill as much of the screen as possible, and consider using a high-DPI display.

Saving Without a High-Resolution Display

If you don't have a high-DPI display available, you can use the developer tools in your browser to render Hamina Network Planner in high resolution before saving the view as an image.

While this is most likely possible in every popular web browser, here's how to do it in Google Chrome:

  1. Open the Developer Tools window.

  2. In the upper left corner of the DevTools window, click the Toggle device toolbar button.

  3. In the Dimensions drop-down menu, select Edit... from the list.

  4. Back in the DevTools window, click the Add custom device button.

  5. Configure the custom device with the desired name ("4K" in this example) and resolution (such as 3840 x 2160, which will produce an image that is slightly less than 4K), and change the User agent string dropdown menu to Desktop. Click the Add button.

  6. Back in the main browser window, select your custom device from the Dimensions drop-down menu.

  7. Click the Reporting button, and select Save current view as image. If you need to adjust the heatmap or layer settings, switch back to Responsive as needed, and switch back to your custom device to perform final map zooming and centering before saving the image.

  8. When you're finished gathering images, closing the Developer Tools window will automatically switch the Device Toolbar off. Re-opening the Developer Tools window will switch the Device Toolbar back on.

Your custom profile will be saved for future images. All you'll need to do is open Developer Tools, and select the desired custom device.
